Getting you started

Dear half marathoners,

the excitement is on the rise, anticipation comes with every running session and the skin is about to tingle… This is what your whole preparation was leading up to and the time has finally come.

To get you prepared for race day, we would like to provide you with some important information, which gets you started. Further information will follow at a later time.

1. Before the race

Where do I get my race documents?

You will receive your race documents on the event weekend at the Hamburg Messe + Congress. Please head to the Entrance East on St. Petersburger Strasse 1, Hamburg. Due to the very limited parking options in the area, we recommend using public transportation to get there. These are your options:

  • Underground line U1 to U-Stephansplatz (Oper/CCH) – approx. 10 min. walk
  • Underground line U2 to U-Messehallen – approx. 7 min. walk
  • City railway S11, S21 or S31 as well as regional and long-distance trains to S-Dammtor (Messe/CCH) – approx. 9 min. walk
  • Underground line U1 to U-Stephansplatz (Oper/CCH) – approx. 10 min. by foot.

On race day you can also use the free bicycle parking lot (see Area map Expo // Foyer Entrance East). Should you still intend to travel by car, we recommend that you look for a parking space on the Heiligengeistfeld early. Please note that due to a third-party event, parking is likely to be limited.

When do I get my race documents?

Our gates will be open at the following times:

  • Fri, 23 June 2023: 2.00 to 6.00 p.m.

What am I supposed to do with my race documents?
  • Runners

The bib number is to be worn unchanged and visibly on the front of your sportswear. You can have safety pins for attachment it on site. The bib number also contains a small, detachable section which you should use to mark your luggage for the use of the free luggage service.

The official BMS Chip or a rental substitute is used for timing. The latter you will receive with your race documents. The chip needs to be attached on top of your feet. Tie it tightly into the laces of your running shoe so that it lies flat on it. After the run, it must be returned in the blue containers labeled Chip-Rückgabe (chip return) in the post finish area. Do not hesitate to ask the staff on site for help if needed. Otherwise, you will be charged a penalty fee of 15.00 Euros.

  • Skaters

Please use the three-part bib number as follows: Attach the large part visibly to the back of your sportswear. You can have safety pins for attachment on site. The bib number also contains a small, detachable part which you should use to mark your luggage for the use of the free luggage service. Another section must be attached to the right thigh for identification by the finish camera.

An active transponder is used for timing. The transponder is attached to the ankle with velcro tape. After the run, it must be returned in the blue containers labeled Chip-Rückgabe (chip return) in the post finish area. Do not hesitate to ask the staff on site for help if needed. Otherwise, you will be charged a penalty fee of 90.00 Euros.

Where can I get official merch?

If you have ordered the official finisher shirt, you will find a pickup slip with your race documents. Please present this at the shirt counter, which you will find to the right of the exit (see also Area map Expo // Foyer Entrance East). The shirt can also be purchased on the weekend of the event. However, only while stocks last!

You can also buy the official signature Socks v3 here for 20.00 Euros.

2. The race

When will the race start?

The start will take place in blocks to ensure that the flow of participants is always comfortable on the course. It also helps to relieve critical areas such as narrower sections of the course, water points as well as the post finish area.

Support this by arriving at the pre-start area at the times listed below according to your expected finish time (see Area map Reeperbahn/Glacischaussee // Start Area).

8.30 a.m. – Block S: Skating
9.00 a.m. – Block A: Running sub 1h45m
9.15 a.m. – Block B: Running sub 2h00m
9.30 a.m. – Block C: Running sub 2h15m
9.45 a.m. – Block D: Running sub 3h30m

Note that the starting blocks will gradually move up to the starting line. Pay attention to the signs and pa announcer on site.

How will the course & finish supply will be handed?

The hella hamburg half is a summer event and this requires special precautions. To ensure an optimal supply for all athletes at any time, we developed a extensive suppy concept.

There will be 7 water supply point along the course in total. They are located at KM 3.7 – 7.0 – 9.3 – 12.4 – 15.0 – 17.5 and 19.7 (see course map). Please also make use of the supply points at the start and the start line-up area. Note that you do not have to wait in line to get your water. Just look for a free spot along the supply station to “refuel” so the flow of the race keeps going.

New: We now offer hella AKTIV (isotonic drink) in addition to water at the supply stations 5, 6 and 7.

To prevent your body from overheating, each supply station provides a shower and water tanks with sponges. We therefore ask all participants to make good use of these in the event of heat, while drinks will only be used for drinking. Additional showers can be found in front of the start and the finish line and also in the post finish area. Wet your head and body and bring a headgear with you.

Skaters can be unconcerned since the showers will not be activated until the field has passed.

After you finished you can look forward to a large range of different of refreshments drinks from the hella assortment, ERDINGER Alkoholfrei (non-alcoholic beer), fresh fruit and snacks for recovery.
